Calculated times, rounded to the minute. Clouds, haze and the horizon you're looking at all change what you actually see.

Watching the sunset from the water

Clearwater Beach sits on a barrier island facing the Gulf of Mexico, which faces west. That's why the sunsets here get so much attention: on a clear evening the sun drops straight toward an open horizon. From the water, you get that view without a crowd standing in front of you.

A few things make a sunset ride better:

  • Look west and give yourself space. The best views have an open western horizon, so keep buildings, bridges and other boats out of the line between you and the sun.
  • Watch the sky after the sun goes down. The colors often peak a few minutes after sunset. "Last light" in the table is the end of civil twilight, when the sky is still bright enough to see without lights.
  • Bring sunglasses. The sun is low and bright in the half hour before sunset, and it reflects off the water.
  • Pack a layer. It can feel cooler once the sun is down, especially if you got splashed.

Timing a sunset mini boat ride

Plan backwards from the sunset time for your date. You want to be on the water and settled before the sun gets low, not still getting your walkthrough. Every Clearwater Escapes ride starts with a walkthrough of the controls and safety basics and you'll get your life vests, so leave time for that before golden hour.

Sunset times shift by a minute or two a day, and by more than an hour over the year, so check this page for your actual date. When you request your escape, add your date and mention sunset in the notes. We reach out to confirm your date, crew size and launch point, and we can talk timing then.
